It’s been a great week at S2P as we engaged professionals across multiple industries throughout the nation and abroad in our Free online training on Remote Working. We’ve learned a lot from the participants of our sessions on the challenges they are facing with transitioning to working from home. These challenges are real and we believe they represent some of the societal and workplace shifts that are transforming how we approach our work responsibilities, how we work with each other to get things done, and how we view and appreciate frontline workers. Here are the 15 societal and workplace shifts we’ve captured and we’d love to get your thoughts on each of them.

People have a new profound love and appreciation for frontline healthcare workers given what we all continue to witness during the pandemic. They literally are our brave frontline soldiers who have been fighting this war, with at times, inadequate armory and weapons.

  1. People have a greater appreciation for truck drivers and all supply chain workers for their service in ensuring everyone can get what they need when they need it, even in a time of a highly contagious virus.

  2. Parents have a heightened respect for teachers given that parents have had to help their school-aged children with their schoolwork and they have found it to be very challenging.

  3. People have a pent-up desire to serve and to make a difference but aren’t sure how to do so.

  4. The large number of employees working remotely has stress tested the ability and capability for leaders to lead from home, the readiness of all of employees to work from home with little to no disruption, and the bandwidth of virtual meeting platforms.

  5. Working remotely will/has become a new norm and it will stick with us for the long term beyond the pandemic. Companies and employees have learned that much of their work can be done from home and they’ve seen that there is a real business case for businesses and a social case for employees.

  6. As more workers work from home, leaders will need to adapt their leadership styles to be more results driven and less time/hours driven. Organizations will need to help leaders lead from a distance (how do you best communicate expectations and deliverables to your team and individuals).

  7. Learning leaders of organizations are overwhelmed with how to fully and effectively support team members at all levels. (i.e. onboarding, safety training, compliance certifications, etc.)

  8. Face-to-face virtual training, consulting, coaching, and networking and tele-health are here to stay and grow.

  9. Small and brief group learning and meetings will be preferred over larger and longer learning sessions and meetings.

  10. Individuals, families, teams, and organizations are all discovering an element of codependency. Its ok to let others help you. (we will all 'get through this' better by working together more than ever - rather than solely independent as we may have in the past). The inspiring private and public partnerships continue to demonstrate that together we can achieve more in terms of outcomes and speed.

  11. Work hours are shifting rapidly........with remote work, the standard '8-5' business day has radically shifted to working when you can at all hours.

  12. Given that the government has now recognized the gig worker by including them in their unprecedented rescue plan to receive some financial relief, the number of gig workers will continue to grow. In addition to 1099 gig workers we will also see more FTE employees taking on gig work for additional income.

  13. School systems will need to make sure they are ready in the future to leverage and invest in technology ( for all students, all grades) to reach their students at home. This also includes laptops and internet for ALL students and more training for teachers on how to teach their students effectively using technology.

  14. Colleges and Universities will also need to improve their ability to teach remotely. The technology capability has been in place for a while, but training is needed on how the needs of the students change when receiving instruction virtually versus in the classroom. Examples of the changes in the needs of the students include having their teachers be more responsive to emails and phone calls, be more accessibile for additional clarification and support, adoption of engagement techniques for delivering instruction, among others.
